Tesla Wall Connector red light codes from 1 to 7 blinks, solid red and solid yellow, and what to do about each.
Tesla Wall Connector red light codes tell you why your home charger stopped or slowed down. Here is what each pattern means on the Gen 3 Wall Connector, from 1 to 7 red blinks to solid red and solid yellow, and what to do next.
How to read the light
Count the red blinks. Each code blinks a set number of times, pauses for about a second, then repeats. When you turn the breaker on, all the lights come on for a few seconds as a startup check, which is normal.
Red light codes
| Light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 red blink | Ground fault: current found an unsafe path. Charging stops. | Look over the handle, cable, charger and your car's charge port for damage or water. If an electrician finds the supply is fine, contact Tesla. |
| 2 red blinks | Grounding problem (the ground connection is poor). Charging stops. | Have an electrician check that the unit is properly grounded, including every connection back to the panel. |
| 3 red blinks | Too hot. Charging slows or stops. | Make sure the charger is on Wi-Fi so it gets the latest firmware. Have an electrician check wire size and that the terminals are tightened correctly. |
| 4 red blinks | Lost its internet connection. Online features stop, but this is not a charging fault. | Check your router and move anything blocking the signal. If you changed your Wi-Fi password, re-enter it through the setup process. |
| 5 red blinks | Linked Wall Connectors can't talk to each other (power sharing). Charging is reduced. | Reduce Wi-Fi interference and re-link the units through setup. |
| 6 red blinks | Voltage too high or poor power quality. Charging stops. | Have an electrician measure the voltage at the charger. |
| 7 red blinks | The car drew more current than allowed. | Lower the charge current on your car's Charging screen. If it keeps happening on a Tesla, note the time and contact Tesla. For another brand, contact that carmaker. |
| Solid red | Internal fault. Charging stops. | Turn the breaker off, wait 5 seconds, turn it back on. If it stays red, write down the part and serial numbers and contact Tesla. |
Other lights
- Solid yellow: not a fault. The Wall Connector has power but hasn't been set up (commissioned) yet. Your installer finishes this with Tesla's setup app.
- No lights: no power is reaching the unit. Check the breaker. If it is on, have an electrician check for voltage at the charger.
- Green and blue lights are normal status lights for standby, charging and talking to the car.
Good to know
- Electrical checks inside the charger are a job for a licensed electrician, not a DIY fix.
- These codes are for the Gen 3 Wall Connector. The Universal Wall Connector may differ, so check its manual.
- If a code keeps coming back, Tesla's support site has a Diagnose tool that can start a support request.
