Why do Tesla brake lights come on when you lift off the accelerator?

Why Tesla brake lights come on when you lift off the accelerator, and which regen settings you can change.

Tesla brake lights come on when you lift off the accelerator because regenerative braking can slow the car as much as a light press of the brake pedal. The car turns the lights on so drivers behind you know you're slowing.

Why it happens

When you ease off the accelerator, the motor slows the car and sends energy back to the battery. This is regenerative braking, or regen. Tesla's manual says that when regen is slowing the car aggressively, such as when you take your foot fully off the pedal at highway speed, the brake lights turn on. A gentle lift usually slows the car less. Tesla doesn't publish the exact threshold.

Can you turn it off?

No. Tesla's manual doesn't describe any setting for this, and it is there for safety. What you can change is how strongly the car slows:

  • Model Y (current manual): Controls, Dynamics, Deceleration Mode. Standard gives the most regen. Reduced lets the car coast farther, so you slow more gradually.
  • Model 3 (current manual): Controls, Dynamics has the option Apply Brakes When Regenerative Braking Is Limited, which keeps slowing consistent when regen is limited.
  • Lifting off the pedal more gradually also slows the car more gently.

Menu names vary by model and software version, so check your owner's manual.

Good to know

  • Regen can be limited when the battery is cold or full. Recent cars may use the regular brakes to make up the difference, so the car slows the same.
  • Never rely on regen alone to stop. Be ready to use the brake pedal.
