Universal Wall Connector vs Wall Connector compared: price, speed, plugs and which one suits your household.

Universal Wall Connector vs Wall Connector: both are Tesla's hardwired home chargers with the same top speed. The real difference is which cars can plug in. Here is how to choose.

Buy the Wall Connector if

  • Everyone in your household drives a Tesla, or another EV with a NACS port.
  • You want to save the price difference.

Buy the Universal Wall Connector if

  • You own, or may own, an EV with a J1772 port.
  • Guests or family with other EVs charge at your home.
  • You'd rather not keep a separate adapter. The Universal version's J1772 adapter is part of the unit.

Good to know

  • Speed depends on the car as well as the charger. Some Model 3 and Model Y versions can only take 32 A, about 30 miles per hour, on either unit. See 32 amp vs 48 amp charging.
  • A J1772 car can still use the regular Wall Connector with a separate NACS-to-J1772 adapter.
  • Both must be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Tesla lists home backup (Powershare) options with these chargers for certain vehicles and setups. Check the shop page if that matters to you.
