Home charging: Wall Connector or Mobile Connector?

Published Oct 22, 2026 · Updated Oct 22, 2026 · 7 min read · By VoltCoach

What each option costs, how fast it charges, and what to ask an installer.

You can charge a Tesla at home with a portable cable or a wall-mounted unit. Here is how they compare, using Tesla's own figures.

The options

Mobile Connector Wall Connector Universal Wall Connector
Price (Tesla) $300 $585 $660
Speed 3 to 30 miles of range per hour Up to 44 Up to 44
Plugs Tesla (NACS) Tesla (NACS) NACS and J1772
Cable 20 ft 24 ft 24 ft
Mounting Portable Fixed Fixed
App control No Yes Yes

On a standard 120 V household outlet, the Mobile Connector adds about 2 to 3 miles of range per hour. On a 240 V outlet it can add up to 30 miles per hour. Model 3 and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive are limited to 32 amps (up to 30 miles per hour) with either connector.

What to think about

  • Your daily driving. One outlet suggests a 120 V outlet suits drivers covering under about 20 to 30 miles a day, and a 240 V setup suits drivers averaging 40 or more.
  • Other vehicles. The Universal Wall Connector works with other EVs, which matters if you may own another brand.
  • Features. Tesla says a Wall Connector is not required, but recommends it for speed and features such as scheduling, charging statistics and access control.
  • Installation. If an installer approves an existing 240 V outlet, installation can cost nothing. A new 240 V outlet is about $750 to $1,500 on Tesla's page. A long wire run, extra panel, trenching or panel upgrade adds cost.

Before you buy

  • Get a quote from a Tesla Certified Installer. Tesla recommends buying equipment before scheduling installation, and scheduling installation before delivery.
  • Check local rebates and electricity rates. Some utilities offer cheaper off-peak overnight rates.
  • Renters and condo owners can ask their property manager. Tesla provides request templates.
