Where to set the charge limit, and why the right number depends on your battery type.
On this page
The charge limit is the level your car stops charging at. The best everyday number depends on which battery your car has.
Where to set it
- Touchscreen: open the charging screen and tap Set Limit.
- Tesla app: open the charging screen and drag the slider.
Which number to pick
Tesla says to set the limit based on your battery, and that the vehicle screen shows the recommended limit. Start there.
According to a 2021 InsideEVs report on Model 3: - Cars with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery: Tesla recommended a 100% limit even for daily use, and a full charge at least once a week. The charging screen shows a battery graphic marked 50% and 100%. - Other batteries: charge to 80% or 90% for everyday use and save 100% for road trips. The graphic is marked Daily and Trip.
Tesla's guidance can change with software and model, so follow the recommendation your car shows.
Good to know
- On a road trip, navigation recommends a charge level to reach the next Supercharger. At busy sites the limit may be set to 80% automatically, and you can raise it.
- Charging slows as the battery fills, so going from 80% to 100% takes much longer than reaching 80%.
