Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 23, 2026. Last updated: October 28, 2026.
VoltCoach ("we", "us") respects your privacy. This policy explains what the app and this website collect and how it is used.
What stays on your device
Your vehicles, inspection checklists and photos, issues, documents (such as registration and insurance), charging and maintenance logs, saved items and settings are stored on your device. We do not receive them and cannot see them, unless you sign in to a VoltCoach account to sync them between your devices (see below). The other exception is data your car sends if you turn on Tesla Car Connection, described below.
VoltCoach account and sync (optional)
You can sign in with Apple or Google to keep your data on all your devices (iPhone, iPad and Android) and to move to a new phone. The app works the same without an account.
- Signing in: Apple or Google confirms who you are and gives the app a sign-in token, which we check once. We never see your password. We keep a one-way code made from your Apple or Google account ID (not the ID itself), and your email address, stored encrypted, so the app can show which account you are signed in with. If you use Sign in with Apple's Hide My Email, we only see that private relay address. Signing in with the same verified email on Apple and Google joins the two into one account.
- What syncs: your vehicles, inspections, condition records, documents, maintenance, charging and mileage logs, costs, saved places, a few preferences (such as units, theme, language and your first name if you gave one), and the photos and files you add. Tesla sign-ins, car readings, notification schedules and the sample cars never sync.
- How it is kept: on VoltCoach's own server, encrypted (AES-256). We use it only to sync your devices; we do not read it, sell it, use it for advertising or share it. Each account can store up to 2 GB.
- Signing out stops syncing on that device; your data stays on the device and in your account. A device that has not been used for 6 months is signed out.
- Deleting your account (in the app under More > Account > Delete my data) immediately erases everything synced to it, including photos and files, and your sign-in details.
Information the app can use, with your permission
- Location (your phone): to show nearby chargers, plan trips and fill in inspection locations. When you search for chargers or check a trip, the point you search around (or the trip's start and end, or the place name you type) is sent to our server, which passes it to the charger or routing service and sends back the results. We do not store or log these lookups; identical searches are briefly cached (minutes) without anything that identifies you. Your phone's location goes to the map app you choose only when you open directions. Your car's location is a separate, optional setting (see Trips with places below).
- Camera and photos: to take and attach inspection photos and to import receipts or screenshots. Photos stay on your device unless you share a report, or you choose to show a photo to Ask Coach (see Ask Coach below).
- Notifications: for reminders you turn on, which are scheduled on your device, and, with Pro, car alerts our server sends (see Car alerts below).
Family sharing (coming soon)
Family sharing is not available yet. When it is, it will use VoltCoach accounts, and this policy will be updated first to say exactly what is shared and with whom.
Third-party services
- Open Charge Map and similar data sources for charger information, reached through our server.
- OpenRouteService, for trip routes and place suggestions, reached through our server.
- Your maps app (Apple Maps, Google Maps or others) when you open directions.
- Your phone's maps service (Apple's on iPhone and iPad, Google's on Android), used on your phone to show place names for trips and to find where the Superchargers in your charging history are. Open Charge Map is used the same way to pinpoint those Superchargers.
- Tesla if you sign in to the Delivery tracker or to Tesla Car Connection (see below).
- Cloudflare, which carries traffic to this website and to our server, and runs the small sign-in function described below.
- Retailers when you tap a Shop link. These sites have their own privacy policies and may set cookies.
- Launch email list. If you enter your email on this website to be notified at launch, we store only that email and the date, and use it only to tell you when the app is available. Ask us to remove it any time at contact@voltcoach.app.
- Electricity prices for the optional Cheapest time to charge tool. If you choose ComEd Hourly Pricing, your phone reads ComEd's published hourly prices directly from ComEd; nothing about you is sent beyond a normal web request. If you look up your plan, the ZIP code you enter is sent to our server, which looks it up in OpenEI's U.S. Utility Rate Database; the ZIP code is not stored. Your chosen plan is kept on your phone.
- Open-Meteo, for elevation and wind when you open a trip's energy breakdown (trips with places only; see below).
- Expo and Apple or Google, which deliver car alert notifications and News from VoltCoach if you turn them on (see Car alerts and News from VoltCoach).
- Apple or Google if you buy a plan in the app; the App Store or Google Play handles payment and does not share card details with us.
- Apple and Google if you sign in to a VoltCoach account with them (see VoltCoach account and sync).
Affiliate links
Some Shop links are affiliate links. If you buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Retailers may track the click according to their own policies.
Anonymous usage statistics
To learn which parts of the app are used, the app counts which screens are opened (for example "Trips" or "Charging recap") and sends those counts, with the app version and whether the phone runs iOS or Android, to our server in small batches. No name, email, device or advertising identifier, Tesla account, VIN or location is included, and our server keeps only daily totals per screen. Your network address is used only briefly to prevent abuse and is not stored. This is on by default and you can turn it off any time under More > Privacy > Share anonymous usage. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or track you across other apps or websites.
Tesla account sign-in (optional)
The Delivery tracker can read your Tesla order status if you choose to sign in with your Tesla account. This is optional and everything else in the app works without it.
- Your password: you type it only on Tesla's own sign-in page, which opens from the app. The app and we never see or store it.
- What the app stores: Tesla returns a sign-in key (a token) that lets the app check your order later. It is kept in your phone's secure storage (the iPhone Keychain or Android Keystore), on your device only. We never receive it and it is never shared with family members.
- What it reads: your order details and progress, such as model, options, delivery window, checklist steps and, once Tesla provides them, VIN and appointment. The app talks directly to Tesla's servers. Nothing passes through us.
- Where it is kept: the latest order snapshot and a history of changes are saved on your device so the tracker can show what changed. We do not receive them.
- Signing out: signing out in the tracker deletes the saved key, the order snapshot and the change history from your device. Deleting the app does the same. You can also review or revoke third-party access from your Tesla account.
This connection uses Tesla's sign-in and order services in a way Tesla has not formally approved for third-party apps, so it could change or stop working at any time. Tesla's own privacy notice governs the data Tesla holds.
Tesla Car Connection (optional)
Tesla Car Connection uses Tesla's official Fleet API so the app can show your car's live status and, with Pro, log your trips and charging automatically. It is optional and separate from the Delivery tracker sign-in.
- Signing in: you sign in on Tesla's own page. The app and we never see your password. Tesla returns sign-in keys (tokens) that are kept in your phone's secure storage (the iPhone Keychain or Android Keystore) on your device.
- Sign-in function: a small function on voltcoach.app completes the sign-in and renews it, because it holds the app's Tesla secret. It does not store your tokens. For fair use it keeps a one-way scrambled code for your Tesla account (not your account number) with that day's request counts, deleted after 3 days, and, only if an account is blocked for misuse, that code on a block list.
- VoltCoach key: you add VoltCoach's key to your car in the Tesla app. It is used to send your car its data-sharing settings and to run controls only when you tap them (for example waking the car). You can remove the key in your car or the Tesla app at any time.
- What your car sends to us: once connected, your car sends status updates directly to VoltCoach's server: battery level and range, battery details (energy remaining, lifetime energy used, the highest and lowest cell voltages, and battery temperatures), charging state, power and energy, charger type, locks, doors and windows, Sentry mode, climate and temperatures, odometer, gear and speed, tire pressures and warnings, software version, distance and temperature units, energy recovered by regenerative braking, whether climate is on, miles driven on Full Self-Driving (newer cars only), and whether the car reports being at its saved Home, Work or favorite location (a yes or no, not a position).
- What we keep: the latest value of each reading; a 30-day history of battery, odometer and charging readings; and summaries of your trips (start and end time, distance, battery and energy used, top speed, outside temperature, energy recovered by regenerative braking, minutes climate was on, miles on Full Self-Driving, and a reading about every 30 seconds of speed, battery, odometer and energy for the trip's graphs) charging sessions (times, energy, battery levels, charging speed, charger type), and one battery health summary per day (estimated usable capacity, range at full charge, time spent at low, middle and high charge, lifetime energy used, cell voltage spread, battery temperatures, how much charge the battery lost while parked, and how long Sentry Mode was on), and the list of software versions your car has installed with the date each was first seen. Summaries are kept until you delete your account.
- Who can see it: only you, in the app. Each request must carry your Tesla sign-in, and our server checks with Tesla which cars belong to your account before returning anything. We never store your Tesla tokens on the server. We do not sell this data or use it for advertising.
- Where it is kept: on servers we operate in the United States. Connections are encrypted, and your car connects using a certificate issued by Tesla.
Trips with places (optional)
If you turn on Log trips with places (asked once, and changeable in the app under More > Privacy), your car also sends its GPS position and, while you use navigation, the name and position of your destination. We keep where each trip starts and ends, the route, the destination's name when you parked there, and where you charged, so they can be shown on a map and on Car status. It is off unless you turn it on. Turning it off stops your car sending its position and erases every saved trip start, end, route, destination name and charging location. Street and place names are looked up on your phone using its maps service (Apple's or Google's), not by us. To estimate where a trip's energy went, your phone sends a sample of the trip's route points and its time to Open-Meteo, a free weather and elevation service, to look up hills and wind; this happens only when you open that trip, sends nothing that identifies you, and the results are kept on your phone.
Car alerts (Pro, optional)
If you have Pro and allow notifications, the app gives our server your phone's push notification address (a token from Expo, the service the app is built with) for your cars, so we can tell you when a door, the trunk, the frunk or a window has been open for 15 minutes while your car is parked. The alert is sent through Expo's push service and Apple or Google, and contains only the alert text. We keep a copy of each alert we send (its text, the car and when it was sent) for 90 days, so the app's notification list can show alerts you dismissed on your phone; older copies are deleted automatically. Turning the alert off in More > Privacy removes the token from our server; deleting your account removes the token and the alert history.
Ask Coach (Pro)
When you ask Coach a question, the app sends the question, a short summary of what it knows about your car (such as maintenance due and charging totals, never your VIN or documents) and any photo you choose to add to VoltCoach's server. The answer is written by an AI model that VoltCoach runs on its own computers; nothing is sent to an outside AI company. Photos are used only to answer that question: they are not stored on our server, and the question and photo are discarded as soon as the answer is ready. The answer is kept on our server for about 10 minutes so the app can read it, then deleted; the question and answer text (never photos) are held in memory for up to 2 days only so you can rate the answer. If you rate an answer with a thumbs up or down, we keep that question, the answer, your rating and any comment you add for 180 days to improve Coach, with nothing that identifies you or your car. How-to questions Coach has no information for are also kept for 180 days, without anything that identifies you, so we can add answers for them. Your past chats are saved only on your phone (without the photos), and you can delete them in the app. Coach's answers can be wrong; for safety concerns, contact Tesla Service.
News from VoltCoach
Now and then we post a short message for everyone who uses the app, such as a new feature or an important update. The app reads recent messages from our server and shows them in its notification list (and sometimes as a card), which sends nothing about you. Once you allow notifications, the app also gives our server your phone's push notification address (a token from Expo) whether you turned on News from VoltCoach in Settings, and whether the phone runs iOS or Android (so we can count how many of each use the app). That is all we keep: no account, name or car. Messages are pushed only to phones that turned that setting on, through Expo's push service and Apple or Google. A token the app hasn't used for 180 days is deleted automatically, and we drop it sooner if Apple or Google says the app was removed.
Sentry alerts (Pro, optional)
If you turn on Sentry alerts, your car tells our server when Sentry Mode notices someone close to the car or its alarm goes off, and we send a notification to your phone. To do this we keep your phone's push notification address (a token from Expo) for your cars, your alert choices, and a history of Sentry events: when each happened, whether it was someone close or the alarm, and whether the car was at home or away. If you also turned on trips with places, we keep where the car was parked for each event. Tesla does not share Sentry video with us; clips stay on your car's USB drive. Events are deleted after 90 days. Turning Sentry alerts off removes your phone's token and alert choices; turning off trips with places removes the saved positions; deleting your account removes everything.
Automations (Pro, optional)
Automations let your car do things on a schedule or when something happens, such as warming the cabin on weekday mornings or turning on Sentry Mode when parked, even when your phone is closed. They are off unless you turn them on. When you do, you sign in to Tesla once more, just for automations, and allow VoltCoach to send commands to your car. Our server then keeps:
- A Tesla sign-in for automations (a refresh token). It is encrypted on our server, never shown to anyone, never written to logs, and replaced each time Tesla issues a new one. It is used only to run the automations you set up.
- The automations you create (what should happen, and when).
- A history of recent runs (when each automation ran, what it sent to your car and whether it worked), up to the last 200 runs, so you can see them in the app.
Commands go from our server to your car through Tesla's official Fleet API and are signed with VoltCoach's key, as Tesla requires. We limit how many commands can be sent each day. Disconnect and delete in the app (More > Account > Tesla > Commands while you're away, or on the Automations page) immediately deletes the stored sign-in, every automation and its history. A sign-in that has not been used for 90 days is deleted automatically, and deleting your account deletes it too. You can also remove VoltCoach's access in your Tesla account at any time.
Smart charging (Pro, optional)
Smart charging is part of Automations and uses the same Tesla sign-in. It is off unless you turn it on. When your car is plugged in at home, our server works out the cheapest time to start charging that still finishes by your ready-by time, and sends your car one command setting a one-time charging start. For this, our server keeps:
- Your home location, encrypted and rounded to about 100 meters. It is taken from your phone once, only when you tap to set it while at home, and is used only to check that your car is plugged in at home and to tell the car where the schedule applies. This is the only time your phone's location is sent to us.
- Your Smart charging choices (encrypted): the ready-by time, your charger's speed and your electricity plan's hourly prices (or that you use ComEd hourly pricing, whose public prices our server looks up).
- The result of the last plug-in (the start time set and the estimated cost), also shown in the run history.
Turning Smart charging off stops it, and revoking Automations or deleting your account deletes all of it.
Stopping and deleting
- Delete my data (in the app under More > Account) erases everything our server keeps about your cars (including push notification tokens, car alert and Sentry alert history and the Tesla sign-in, automations and run history kept for Automations) and your VoltCoach account with everything synced to it, tells your cars to stop sending data to us, and erases the app's data on your phone.
- Signing out of Tesla Car Connection stops the app reading your car. To stop your car sending data as well, delete your account in the app or remove the VoltCoach key from your car.
- Your car's data-sharing settings also expire on their own if you stop using the app for about a year.
Community (optional)
The Community tab shows typical delivery waits and what other owners ordered, built from owners who turn on Share my order anonymously (in Community, or More > Privacy). It is off unless you turn it on. When it is on, the app sends our server, for each Tesla order on your phone:
- the model, trim, paint color, interior, wheels, whether you added Full Self-Driving or a tow hitch, the factory (read from the VIN on your phone) and your country;
- the month you ordered, how many days each step took (VIN assigned, delivery scheduled, delivered) and which step the order is at.
Never your name, email, VIN, reservation number, delivery center or address. So that an order is only counted once, the app sends a one-way code made from the reservation number, and our server scrambles that code again with its own secret before storing it, so stored orders can't be matched to a reservation number. Numbers are shown only for groups of at least 5 orders, so no one can be picked out. Turning sharing off, or Delete my data, removes your shared orders right away; orders not updated for about 13 months are deleted automatically.
Your choices
You can turn off permissions in your phone's settings, delete any item in the app, sign out of or delete your VoltCoach account, turn trips with places or anonymous sharing on or off under More > Privacy, delete your account and server data in the app, or delete the app to remove everything stored on your device. To ask about any data we hold, or to have it deleted, contact contact@voltcoach.app (see Delete your account for every way to delete it).
Children
VoltCoach is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
We will post updates here and change the date above. Changes to this website and policy are listed below.
- October 28, 2026: Community is live: what an order shares when you turn on Share my order anonymously, and how it is removed. Removed the Documents lock, which the app does not have. The app's account settings moved to More > Account, with one Delete my data option. Android: secure storage, maps, notifications and payments now name Google alongside Apple, and a page explains how to delete your account. Added optional Smart charging (Pro): the encrypted home location, charging choices and last result our server keeps for it. Usage counts and the push token now include whether the phone runs iOS or Android.
- October 27, 2026: Ask Coach: rated answers and unanswered how-to questions are kept for 180 days, without anything that identifies you, to improve Coach.
- October 26, 2026: car alerts: our server now keeps a 90-day history of the alerts it sends, so the app's notification list can show alerts you dismissed.
- October 26, 2026: added optional Sentry alerts (Pro): the push token, alert choices and 90-day Sentry event history our server keeps, and that Sentry video is never shared with us.
- October 25, 2026: added optional Automations (Pro): the encrypted Tesla sign-in, automations and run history our server keeps for them, how commands reach your car, and how to revoke and delete them.
- October 24, 2026: added trip graphs (speed, efficiency and battery readings every 30 seconds), Full Self-Driving miles, regenerative braking energy and climate time for each trip, the navigation destination (trips with places only), Open-Meteo lookups for the trip energy breakdown, and optional car alerts sent as push notifications.
- October 23, 2026: added Tesla Car Connection: the data your car sends to our server, how long it is kept, who can see it, the optional trips with places setting, account deletion, and the sign-in function's fair-use records. Clarified that your phone's location is never sent to us, and added the Community beta and Cloudflare. Added anonymous usage statistics (on by default, can be turned off), battery health readings with a daily battery summary (including parked battery loss), software version history, and the electricity price sources for Cheapest time to charge.
- October 14, 2026: added the optional Tesla account sign-in section for the Delivery tracker, and a related entry on the support page.
