How fast a NEMA 14-50 outlet charges a Tesla with the Mobile Connector, plus miles of range per hour for every other adapter.
How fast does a NEMA 14-50 outlet charge a Tesla? With Tesla's Mobile Connector and 14-50 adapter, a Model 3 adds up to about 30 miles of range per hour, according to Tesla. Here is the full picture, including every other outlet type.
Miles of range per hour by adapter
Tesla's figures for the Mobile Connector. The connector reads which adapter is attached and limits the current to suit that outlet.
| Outlet (adapter) | Volts / breaker | Max current | Model 3 | Model Y | Model S | Model X |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14-50 or 6-50 | 240 V / 50 A | 32 A | 30 | 27 | 27 | 23 |
| 14-30 or 10-30 (dryer) | 240 V / 30 A | 24 A | 22 | 21 | 21 | 17 |
| 6-20 | 240 V / 20 A | 16 A | 15 | 14 | 14 | 12 |
| 6-15 | 240 V / 15 A | 12 A | 11 | 10 | 10 | 9 |
| 5-20 | 120 V / 20 A | 16 A | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6 |
| 5-15 (household) | 120 V / 15 A | 12 A | 6 | 5 | 5 | 4 |
All figures are approximate miles of range added per hour.
What this means overnight
At about 30 miles per hour, ten hours on a 14-50 outlet adds roughly 300 miles of range, which covers most daily driving many times over. A regular household outlet adds only a few miles per hour, so it suits short commutes.
Good to know
- The Mobile Connector tops out at 32 A, so a 14-50 is its fastest option. A Wall Connector can go up to 48 A on cars that accept it. See our guide to home charging.
- Tesla includes the 5-15 and 14-50 adapters with the Mobile Connector. The others are sold separately.
- Tesla's own pages disagree slightly on household-outlet speeds, quoting anywhere from about 2 to 6 miles per hour depending on page and model.
- Cold weather, a lower charge current setting on the Charging screen, or a 208 V supply (common in apartments) will slow things down.
- Have an electrician check an older outlet before charging from it for hours every night.
