Keep a parked car from getting extremely hot, and what it costs in range.

Cabin Overheat Protection keeps a parked car from getting extremely hot, which is handy in summer. It is not the same as Pet Mode.

Turn it on

On the touchscreen go to Controls, then Safety, then Cabin Overheat Protection. In the Tesla app, open Climate and expand the bottom drawer.

The options

  • On: uses air conditioning to keep the cabin below the temperature you pick: 90F (30C), 95F (35C) or 100F (40C).
  • No A/C: brings in outside air with less energy. This option is only on some models.
  • Off: the feature is disabled.

What it costs you

It runs on the battery. On uses more energy, especially on hot, sunny days, and over time you will see less range. One source says it shuts off after 12 hours or when the charge drops to 20%.

Good to know

  • It is for comfort and may slightly protect interior materials. It is not designed to protect people or pets. For that, use Pet Mode.
  • It does nothing for cold weather. For that, precondition the car before you leave.
