Universal Wall Connector vs Wall Connector compared: price, speed, plugs and which one suits your household.
Universal Wall Connector vs Wall Connector: both are Tesla's hardwired home chargers with the same top speed. The real difference is which cars can plug in. Here is how to choose.
Side by side
| Wall Connector | Universal Wall Connector | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (Tesla, US) | $585 | $660 |
| Max output | 48 A (11.5 kW) | 48 A (11.5 kW) |
| Speed | Up to 44 miles of range per hour | Up to 44 miles of range per hour |
| Plugs | Tesla (NACS) | NACS, plus a built-in J1772 adapter |
| Cable | 24 ft | 24 ft |
| Wi-Fi, app scheduling, access control | Yes | Yes |
| Residential warranty | 4 years | 4 years |
Install costs are the same for both. Tesla estimates $750 to $1,500 for a typical installation, more for long wire runs or panel upgrades.
Buy the Wall Connector if
- Everyone in your household drives a Tesla, or another EV with a NACS port.
- You want to save the price difference.
Buy the Universal Wall Connector if
- You own, or may own, an EV with a J1772 port.
- Guests or family with other EVs charge at your home.
- You'd rather not keep a separate adapter. The Universal version's J1772 adapter is part of the unit.
Good to know
- Speed depends on the car as well as the charger. Some Model 3 and Model Y versions can only take 32 A, about 30 miles per hour, on either unit. See 32 amp vs 48 amp charging.
- A J1772 car can still use the regular Wall Connector with a separate NACS-to-J1772 adapter.
- Both must be installed by a qualified electrician.
- Tesla lists home backup (Powershare) options with these chargers for certain vehicles and setups. Check the shop page if that matters to you.
