Cold weather lowers range because the car uses more energy to drive and to heat the cabin and battery. A few habits make a real difference.

What to expect

  • Less range than in mild weather.
  • Weaker regenerative braking until the battery warms up.
  • A blue snowflake on the screen means some energy is unavailable because the battery is cold. Acceleration and charging speed may also be limited until it warms.

Habits that help

  1. Warm the car before you leave. Use Controls, then Schedule, or set a temperature under Climate in the Tesla app, ideally 30 to 45 minutes ahead. Tesla also suggests scheduling a charge with it so the car has enough energy for the trip.
  2. Stay plugged in when parked. The charger, rather than the battery, keeps the battery warm.
  3. Use seat heaters first. Use the seat heaters, and the steering wheel heater if your car has one, and lower the cabin temperature a little. This uses less energy than running the cabin heater harder.
  4. Drive a bit slower and avoid quick, frequent acceleration.
  5. Check your tires. Pressure falls about 1 psi for every 10°F (6°C) of cooling, so inflate before driving if the tire pressure warning light comes on. Winter tires give better grip on snow and ice.
  6. Clear ice with Defrost Car. Climate, then Defrost Car in the app melts ice from the windshield, windows and mirrors. It also thaws a frozen charge port latch.

Good to know

Heading to a Tesla charger? Navigate to it with Trip Planner (if your car has it) at least 30 to 45 minutes before you arrive, so the battery is warm and charges faster.

Menu names can vary by software version and car, so check your owner's manual. For more on preparing the car, see our winter driving tips.
